A priviledge at your fingertips? - Discord
What is a Discord server? What are they for? Who is using discord and what for? Why are they not just using Twitter or facebook? How do I get started with discord?
These are just some of the many questions I get asked about the social platform discord, so I though I would write a quick article on the basics and how you as an an environmentalist have a bigger voice than you think and also how they can be used into the future. Some of the discord servers out there provide a great tool for learning and gaining knowledge on relevant blockchain projects related to environmental improvements. I believe they can be used to educate yourself, and also gain and build one to one communication lines within these communities.
So where do I begin!!! Discord was initially built by gamer's and the community as a VoIP (voice over internet protocal) platform for them to communicate while playing. The platform has since developed into far more and has many use cases. While 'aping' through the metaverse the past few years I have found discord to be of huge use for many reasons. One of the main applications of discord that is being utilised at present is building communities through a discord server. Recently we have seen this growth in many areas including nfts, gaming and art communities and much more. Due to the nature of discord it has seen a lot of adoption from crypto communities and blockchain enthusiasts. In the chosen discord community you can interact with fellow members of the community through a variety of ways, including chat rooms, voice calls, direct messages and much more. It has a lot of similarities with social platforms like whats app, facebook, twitter and instagram.
Discord has been used by blockchain teams and DAO's to help them move forward, and organise their projects. They often have various channels or chat rooms on their servers where they can upload new documentation on their projects or link advice and similar projects. Some are public some are private. Almost every blockchain organisation, or projects being applied to a blockchains will usually have a discord server. In order to get involved with these servers they often have an invite on their website or other social media accounts where you can join. Discord servers can serve as a very good resource for researching blockchains and finding more about them.
Within these communities we can often find like minded people who are interest in the relevant subject/project and often gain much more background education. Team members from the projects have been seen to answer regular Q&A sessions. They have been used to give links to early access events or future projects. Most importantly of all they often have moderators or bots in place to help ensure communities are staying on subject, often with rewards with members who have more engagement in the discord channel. I thought it would be key to highlight in this document that these discord servers, although sometimes filled with emojis and memes, can provide a good opportunity for people to engage with the relevant team members and staff within the chosen projects. I urge you to set up a discord server if you have not yet to learn the basics. You can remain anonymous and yet still question and learn about projects from a silent viewpoint or if you want, get involved with the chosen project.
I have over the past few years been involved in many different discord channels and servers, moderating and staying silent to learn more about the chosen community. I believe that blockchain communities and organisations will communicate more and more about through discord due to opportunity it provides between projects and their communities. I think it also provides you the reader with an opportunity to get involved like never before and you should look at utilising it (especially from an investment and fact learning point of view).
